self made

fight club is a great movie. i am not talking about it being a great action/blood/gore/sex film (which it is) but also it brings about the concept of self.

many questions arise, examples: am i the person i think i am? is personality something that can be easily recreated? if you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?

dont want to spoil anything for those who havent seen it. but i would love to continue on the concept of self just a little bit.

i believe that one's perception of self is whoever he/she thinks that he/she is, BUT other people may perceive him/her otherwise. one may possess qualities (that they think they have) within, but it is a matter of bringing those qualities OUT for others to perceive them the same way as they view themselves.

eg. billy bob views himself as a type-A beast within, but when interacting with others, he acts altruistic and assertive all the time. in this situation others think of him as the nice guy.

in his case, it's a matter of bringing his qualities out to change others' perception of him. (it's important to note that people also prefer to keep certain aspects of themselves to themselves, which is completely acceptable.)

on that note, most of the obstacles we encounter in life are created by ourselves. if you built it up, you can break it down. and if you want it done right, sometimes you have to do it yourself.
